In our striving for Martyr 2.0 we would like to inform you that Martyr has replaced Marcel den Breejen (guitar) due to personal differences. Geoffrey Maas (ex Downcast Collision) has taken the spot of 2nd guitarist effective as of immediately. Geoffrey is the right choice to achieve the goals Martyr is aiming for such as the live shows (aka The Martyr eXperience) and for the forthcoming recordings for a new album planned for 2019.
Geoffrey: “I grew up in a music loving family and from the age of 15 I was busy with music a lot. When I first listened to the album “Rust in Peace” van Megadeth I was very impressed and instantly knew that I wanted to go into the metal. In the years to follow I played in several metal bands and played many gigs in the Netherlands and abroad.
Why MARTYR? After a music break in a very turbulent year I was eager to start playing again. After receiving the invitation for an audition I didn’t have to think twice. After a very good audition I felt at home straight away. I am honoured to excel as a MARTYR guitarist.
Rick Bouwman added: “We regret the fact that we have had member changes in the past year but on the other side I am very proud that MARTYR has withstood the changes. The fact that MARTYR has been active on the metal front since 1982, they are still eager to play better than ever. Geoffrey has been in the picture for some time and we are very happy that he has decided to join MARTYR. A guitar player with massive experience, the right attitude (down to earth) and a great personality. We are looking forward to hit the stages with him.
There will be no disruption of the planned shows, it will even be better. MARTYR 2.0 will sound as never before”.
After many years drummer Wilfried Broekman has decided to leave MARTYR, Wilfried will perform his last two MARTYR shows supporting U.S. metal powerhouse Iced Earth on June 26th (Alkmaar, The Netherlands). and 27th (Hengelo, The Netherlands). Both shows are almost sold out.
After a lot of auditions MARTYR is very happy to announce Rick Valcon as their new drummer. Classically schooled on snare drums and concert percussion from the age of 8, he made the transition to the drum kit at around the age of 16. Throughout the years Valcon has played in various hardrock- metal bands and played hundreds of gigs all over Europe
Why MARTYR? Valcon: "They had kidnapped my cats.... I didn't have a choice! No seriously, the music and style is what I love. After a friend pointed out they needed a new drummer I immediately responded. The rest is history".
Guitarist and founding member Rick Bouwman: "We are very happy Valcon joined the band as we were looking for a well experienced drummer who could handle both the old and new material. Valcon did the job and there was an immediate good vibe at the auditions". The band and management would like to thank everyone who sent in applications, videos, rehearsed the MARTYR songs and made the effort to come and audition for the job. And again we are very honoured by the responses from all over the world. Amazing!. We would like to thank Wilfried for all the amazing years and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Hi Rick, about a year and a half ago, your most recent long player ‘You Are Next’ saw the light of day. It gained good reviews from press and fans from all over the globe. My colleague Sjak Roks did an extensive interview with you and singer Rop van Haren back then. What happened since the release of the ‘You Are Next’ album?
Yes, I remember the interview and review. That was awesome to have so much positive feedback, not only by Lords Of Metal, but as you said the review and positive response came from everywhere. We mainly spent time promoting ‘You Are Next’ by interviews, radio promotion and doing a lot of live shows here in the Netherlands but also many abroad. We toured Greece, played Portugal next to the obvious countries like Germany and Belgium on a frequent base. Next to headlining shows and festivals we had some awesome support opportunities with Saxon, Trivium, Raven, Vicious Rumors and Manilla Road for example We released the album also in Japan on Edge Trax were it was received very well too, so I think you can say ‘You Are Next’ opened many and new doors for the band.
